Our Story

“Running is perhaps the most fundamental of all sports, and it is economically the least costly to perform. As a consequence, it is the most democratic and most competitive of all sports because individual merit can prevail despite economic equality. It is a sport for everyone, the whole world over.”
Bernd Heinrich, Why We Run: A Natural History

The Colts Running Club was created by runners, but it serves athletes of all shapes, sizes, and disciplines. Our coaches are experienced competitive runners who have also competed in sports including: football, soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, and gymnastics. It is our goal to enhance the lives of our athletes though endurance training and healthy habits.

Along with an increased capacity for running and aerobic endurance, our athletes will learn about nutrition and healthy habits like adequate sleep, hydration, and recovery. We hope to inspire new generations of healthy, active, and successful student-athletes who will become healthy, active, and inspiring adults.

“You have to wonder at times what you’re doing out there. Over the years, I’ve given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement.” — Steve Prefontaine, international track star

Our Coaches

The Colts coaches have years of experience working with runners of all ages. They are each life-long runners with a passion for the sport that they enthusiastically share with their runners. Their goal is to spread the joy of running to youth in their community; and mold a few stud-runners along the way!

A Little Background

Our Coaching staff boasts the most combined experience in all of Orange County. Each of our coaches not only enjoys running, but enjoys teaching running and believes in practicing what they preach. The coaches will be running along side the kids every day and leading by example. Each coach brings a wealth of knowledge about running, living an active lifestyle, and competition at the highest levels.

Darrell Cross is the current Freshman Boys Cross Country Coach at Trabuco Hills High School. He understands how to assist runners in making the transition to high school athletics. His enthusiasm is infectious and he is a master motivator.

Sally Boles is a Marathon Maniac. She has finished over 150 marathons and at least one in each of the 50 states. Coach Boles is one of the most energetic and fun coaches there is; as well as one of the fittest women in Orange County. In addition to running, she also teaches swimming at the YMCA in Mission Viejo. She has coached Cross Country and Track at El Toro and Trabuco Hills High Schools. Sally is an expert at helping young athletes find the courage and will to reach their goals. Her ability to connect with young athletes is without equal and her energetic personality is ageless.

Liam Clemons is the Current Head Boys Cross Country Coach and Head Distance Coach at Trabuco Hills High School. He is a three-time California state Cross Country Champion, once as a runner and twice as a coach. Coach Clemons has over 20 years of competitive running experience and nearly 20 years as a coach at the high school, collegiate, and post-collegiate levels. He has mentored hundreds of young runners and helped them find success in sports and life.
